  • ABB Partners with Microsoft to Bring Generative AI to Industrial Applications ABB Partners with Microsoft to Bring Generative AI to Industrial Applications
    Jul 05, 2021
ABB and Microsoft are collaborating to integrate generative AI capabilities into industrial digitalization solutions, creating safer, smarter, and more sustainable operations.   The collaboration aims to deploy Copilot functionality, making ABB Ability™ Genix Industrial Analytics and AI Suite and its applications more intuitive for user interaction, further unlocking the value of associated data to improve efficiency and sustainability.   ABB will leverage Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service to further optimize ABB Ability™ Genix.   Based on their long-term partnership, ABB and Microsoft will integrate Azure OpenAI Service into the ABB Ability™ Genix Industrial Analytics and AI Suite. Both parties will focus on implementing generative AI technology to help industrial clients unlock hidden insights in operational data. Enhanced data collection and governance capabilities will significantly improve efficiency and productivity, enhance asset reliability and operational safety, reduce energy consumption, and minimize environmental impact.   ABB will integrate generative AI into the Genix platform and applications via Azure OpenAI Service, including GPT-4 and other large language models (LLM), enabling code, image, and text generation, among other functionalities. After its release, the new Genix Copilot application will offer intuitive features and simplify associated data flows for various processes and operations, enhancing user experience. By providing real-time executable insights to industry managers, functional experts, and plant engineers, decision quality will be improved, and productivity will be increased. Such insights could potentially extend asset lifecycle by up to 20% and reduce unexpected downtime by up to 60%.     Additionally, the solution will provide advanced monitoring and optimization insights for industrial greenhouse gas emissions and energy utilization, helping customers achieve sustainable development and energy transition goals.   Genix Copilot will also capture the experience of operators, promoting joint decision-making among different roles and emphasizing the protection of internal data and cognitive security within the enterprise.   ABB Ability™ Genix is a comprehensive, modular industrial IoT, analytics, and AI platform that embeds specific domain knowledge to drive business performance while preserving customers' existing investments. Companies running Genix have witnessed up to 40% savings in operational and maintenance costs, up to 30% improvement in production efficiency, and 25% improvement in energy efficiency and emissions optimization. With the addition of generative AI capabilities, Genix is expected to further expand these advantages.   "This is an important step in the strategic partnership between ABB and Microsoft, which will accelerate the pace of digital transformation in the industrial sector," said Rajesh Ramachandran, Chief Digital Officer of ABB's Process Automation business unit. "We believe that Genix Copilot will help industrial customers achieve comprehensive goals in sustainability, operational excellence, and asset performance. By expanding generative AI capabilities in ABB's industrial digitalization solutions, we will lead customers into a new era of AI-empowered decision-making on a massive scale."   "We believe that the modernization and scalability of data platforms are key to ensuring long-term success for businesses," said Ralph Haupter, President of Microsoft Europe, Middle East, and Africa. "Applying advanced digital capabilities such as Azure OpenAI Service will enhance ABB Genix to effectively manage associated data and drive digital transformation, injecting momentum for continuous improvement and innovation."   Genix automates the integration of data from operational technology (OT), information technology (IT), and engineering technology (ET), unleashing the power of data and applying industrial AI to further enhance analytics and optimization capabilities. The platform can seamlessly scale from assets to factories and enterprises, with deployment options across cloud, hybrid, edge, or on-premises. It is designed to be secure and reliable, using Microsoft Azure for integrated cloud connectivity and services.   ABB is a technology leader in the field of electrical and automation, committed to enabling a more sustainable and efficient future. ABB combines engineering expertise with software technology to create solutions that optimize manufacturing, transportation, energy, and operations. With a history of excellence spanning more than 130 years, ABB's approximately 105,000 employees worldwide are dedicated to driving innovation and accelerating industrial transformation.
