The generator automatic voltage regulator belongs to the ABB UNITROL-P series of products, which regulates the generator terminal voltage and invalid power output by changing the magnitude of the excitation current of the generator magnetic field.

 

The automatic voltage regulator is divided into the following three parts according to its function:

 

a. Control unit (ER)

The control unit is designed as a dual circuit (channel 1 & 2), each circuit mainly consists of three parts; i.e. PSR2, Combined I/O, and gate control module. The main function of the control unit is to convert the signals (e.g. voltage, current) from the generator to the A/D converter. These signals are then compared with the set value and sent to the Gate Control Module to control the ignition angle of the SCR.

 

b. Rectifier Unit (EG)

A total of eight sets of rectifier modules, normal six sets can provide full load operation of the excitation current (about 6000 to 8000 amps), with on-line (on-line) maintenance function. Air cooling is utilized with differential pressure alarms on both sides of the air filter to detect the condition of the air filter. The output side of the rectifier each has a set of detectors, in addition to indicating the output current of each group of rectifiers, and will return the signal to the control unit to adjust the trigger angle of the rectifier, so that the output current of each group of rectifiers is the same. 

 

c. Excitation and magnetic potential suppression unit (EE)

Including magnetic field circuit breaker, external excitation circuit breaker, magnetic potential suppression circuit, magnetic field ground detection circuit. There are four magnetic field circuit breakers, which are connected in series and in parallel to provide magnetic field current circuits during normal operation and to start and stop the magnetic field current during abnormality or shutdown.

 

When the generator starts to magnetize, the magnetic field and excitation circuit breakers close in sequence, using the external excitation circuit to provide excitation current to quickly establish the generator terminal voltage. 

 

When the generator terminal voltage reaches 10 % of rated voltage, the automatic voltage regulator (AVR) starts to provide excitation current, and when the generator terminal voltage reaches 30 % of rated voltage, the external excitation circuit breaker opens automatically.

 

The magnetic potential suppression circuit includes suppression resistor, CROWBAR, detection circuit and so on. The main function is that when the generator jumps off, the rectifier on the CROWBAR is rapidly energized to release the stored energy of the magnetic field through the suppression resistor, or when an abnormality occurs in the system and the surge voltage of the excitation circuit exceeds the set value, the rectifier on the CROWBAR is rapidly energized to isolate the voltage surge so as to avoid damaging the insulation of the rotor.

 

Another important protection function of AVR is that when the unit is abnormal, the rectifier trigger angle will be delayed to 150°, and the rectifier output polarity will be inverted quickly, which reduces the arc when the magnetic field circuit breaker starts and stops, and increases the life of the magnetic field circuit breaker.
